GUWAHATI: The Meghalaya National Games 2022 organising committee submitted its first presentation before the executive council meeting of the Indian Olympic Association in New Delhi on Saturday.

In a press statement issued to The Shillong Times on Saturday, John F Kharshiing, working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) said the executive council of IOA was impressed and in agreement with the progress and compliance with various issues as per the host city contract (HCC) taken by the Meghalaya government and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association.

“The IOA thanked the stakeholders for the continued commitment towards making the Games a success and assured all assistance,” Kharshiing said.

Along with Kharshiing, Meghalaya director and joint secretary, sports and youth affairs, Matsiewdor War Nongbri, and MSOA general secretary, Chiranjib Choudhury represented the Games organizing committee.

The host city contract for the Games with IOA was inked by the state government on January 3, 2018. The Games will be held in the year 2022 coinciding with the 50th year of the creation of Meghalaya.

However, the IOA executive committee did raise some issues and concerns regarding infrastructure, hospitality, airport connectivity and the need to have landing facilities for larger aircraft in Meghalaya.

The IOA executive council was chaired by IOA president, Narinder Dhruv Batra, in the presence of IOA secretary general, Rajeev Mehta and other top officials.

The IOA also reviewed the presentations on preparations for the upcoming 36th Goa, 37th Chhatisgarh, 38th Uttarakhand National Games from the respective state officials.

Meghalaya will be the third northeastern state to host the Games after Manipur and Assam in 1999 and 2007 respectively. The state had co-hosted the South Asian Games in February 2016 with Assam.
