SHILLONG: The NEHU Students’ Union along with the  Khasi Students’ Union, NEHU unit, on Monday met the NEHU vice chancellor demanding that the para military forces should be immediately removed from the varsity campus as the forces were creating problems by roaming around the campus and harassing  the students.

Stating that the  forces have entered the campus on Saturday night and still continuing to stay , the two students bodies stated that the university had given  several buildings for their accommodation  while it failed to address the issue of accommodation of more students who were in need of hostels.

According to unions, the presence of these forces in the campus has created a sense of insecurity among the students and It was also brought to the notice of the authority that in the past the university had agreed to stop the accommodation of any forces within the campus.

“During the meeting with the Vice Chancellor,  it was informed to us that the presence of these forces in the campus was because of the pressure of the government of Meghalaya  and we strongly condemn the government of Meghalaya for trying to militarize the academic institution and making it as a barrack while it failed to solve the issue of education,” the statement said

The two bodies also condemned  the incident that happened at Bimola on May 31 and also the inhuman action of the police forces by beating up the youth and using of tear gas and other weapons against the innocent youth and women in different localities of shillong.

“The Students of NEHU will be compelled to go for other means of agitation if these para military forces are not removed from the campus,” the statement added.
