High-powered team reviews situation before NRC draft published in Assam

GUWAHATI:  As the Government of Assam is augmenting security measures in the state in the run up to publication of the second draft of updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) scheduled for June 30 next, a high-level team of senior administration officials and police officials on Wednesday took stock of law and order situation in districts of Bongaigaon, Chirang, Goalpara and Kokrajhar.

A high-level team comprising Chief Secretary T Y Das, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Alok Kumar, DGP Kuladhar Saikia, Special DGP Pallab Bhattacharrya, ADGP (law and order) Agarwala held discussion in Bongaigaon with senior officials of those districts besides officials of Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), an official source here informed.

Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and other senior officials of those districts were engaged in the discussion by the team regarding measures to be taken to maintain law and order in the aftermath of publication of the final draft of the updated NRC.

Various issues related to the NRC updating process were discussed threadbare and importance of constant interaction with people from all walks of life was stressed to allay apprehension of public regarding the NRC updating process.

The officials were sensitized on the importance of making people understand the facilities available to all in respect of submission of claims and objections for which an exhaustive awareness programmer is being launched.

This was the first meeting held by the high-powered team of officials which will also visit all the districts of Upper Assam in coming days before publication of second draft of the updated NTC as per directive of the Supreme Court that has been monitoring the whole process.
