‘DPR for flood management project soon’

SHILLONG: The State Government is targeting to complete the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for tackling the flood problem faced by localities close to the Wahumkhrah River within March.

“We want the DPR to be ready by March as it will allow the State Government to approach the Centre for allocation of funds for the flood management programme,” State Water Resources Minister AL Hek told reporters on Wednesday. While informing that the Government is intending to construct checks dams right from Umkaliar River upto Mawlai Bridge, Hek said that they are also planning to construct proper drains on the small streams which lead to Wahumkhrah.

Hek informed that Union Minister of State of Water Resources, Vincent H Pala, has assured of funds to address the issue under the flood management programme.

“He (Pala) had informed there is no paucity of funds in his Ministry. We only have to prepare the DPR as per the guidelines laid down by the Union Ministry,” Hek said.

According to Hek, the total budget for the flood management programme along Wahumkhrah would touch the Rs-30 crore figure. The Government has constituted a committee which includes the Water Resources department, Central Water Commission and Brahmaputra Board to supervise the project.
