SHILLONG: Residents of 67 villages and traditional heads in Mawkyrwat block have petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reiterating their demand for a community and rural development block following the government’s announcement to upgrade Ranikor to civil sub-division. In a letter addressed to the chief minister on Thursday, the residents referred to an earlier communication to the deputy commissioner of South West Khasi Hills in this regard. In the letter, the C&RD Block Demand Committee of Mawsaw maintained that the demand is justified considering the lack of education and health services and economic backwardness. The C&RD block, the committee members feel, will also bring administration closer to people. The committee said Mawsaw village of Nobosohphoh Syiemship “is an appropriate place” for creating the C&RD block as it is the centre point of the 67 villages and also land will be available for free.
