SHILLONG: Apparently jolted somewhat by the senior leader, MM Danggo’s exit, the Meghalaya Congress is however putting up a brave face, claiming it is prepared for any threat and will ensure a win in the Ranikor bypoll.
Ranikor, represented by Danggo, has been a Congress bastion.
Reacting to the statement of the NPP state chief that more trouble was in the offing for the party, Congress spokesperson, Zenith Sangma on Saturday said, “Congress has its own arithmetic in place and will emerge triumphant in the bypoll.”
He further said that leaders come and go but the party remains and nobody is above it.
Reiterating that Ranikor is a Congress bastion which will be an advantage for the party in the bypoll, Sangma said Danggo’s resignation has done more good than harm to the party.
“As far as NPP’s claims of it growing in strength with Danggo joining the party and others from the Congress camp sending feelers, we will wait and watch,” he said.
Earlier, the NPP state president, WR Kharlukhi had hinted more political jolts for the Congress in the coming days.
With the sudden resignation of Danggo, the Congress has also lost the tag of being the single largest party in the state. Both NPP and Congress now have the support of 20 MLAs each.
The state in a span of few months will once again witness by-polls for Ranikor, and South Tura constituency probably, as chief minister, Conrad Sangma, who is unelected till now, will have to contest the polls.
