SHILLONG: The state government is contemplating setting up vending points for hawkers in areas where both vendors and the public would benefit.
This was revealed by chief minister Conrad Sangma at the second anniversary celebration of the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors’ Association here on Saturday.
“The government is committed to the welfare of each and every citizen of the state,” Sangma said while acknowledging the contribution of hawkers and street vendors to the state’s economy. He said the government is aware of the problems and issues faced by them. “We are committed to the welfare of the hawkers so that they can also move forward in life”, he said. Sangma stressed on the need for a balanced approach to tackle the challenges and difficulties to arrive at a solution acceptable to all. “The government is with you and we want to work with you. But it is not easy for us to do everything the way we want to. We have to work within a certain framework and in a systematic manner,” the chief minister said.
He also urged all stakeholders to work together with sincerity and commitment towards finding an amicable and lasting solution.
