AGARTALA: Reactions have erupted across the state over Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s refusal for the second time in a row to wear convocation gown at the 9th convocation of Tripura (Central) University on Thursday.

Several organisations and political parties had raised objection to the act for violation of norms and practices of conventional statute of Indian universities during convocation.

Leader of the Opposition Ratan Lal Nath demanded that the Chief Minister apologise in public for his violation of the university code while urging varsity authority not to invite him further on such occasions.

“Non-wearing convocation gown by Mr Sarkar during such occasion is challenging the practice and undermine the dignity of the luminaries and foreign leaders who wore rob and took part in the academic procession,” Mr Nath said.

He pointed out that Vice- President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Union Human Resource Minister Kapil Sibal and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni along with all other dignitaries had worn the convocation gown but Mr Sarkar refused it, which had made the university authority embarrassed.

However, Mr Sarkar did not make any comment on the issue. (UNI)
