SHILLONG: The Mawsynram Civil Sub-Division Demand Committee (MCSDDC) has decided to aggressively push for the creation of a new civil sub-division in Mawsynram constituency.
The committee held a meeting here on Thursday to discuss about the long pending demand for a civil sub-division in the constituency.
Local MLA, H.M Shangpliang told reporters that it was decided in the meeting to draft a memorandum on the matter after a threadbare discussion on the modalities to move ahead in placing the demand before the state government.
He said on approval of the draft memorandum, the committee would immediately seek an appointment with chief minister, Conrad Sangma for requesting the government to also declare creation Mawsynram civil subdivision.
Responding to a query, Shangpliang said the creation of Mawsynram civil subdivision was a pending demand for the past 20 years which is yet to be considered by the government.
“The demand is purely based on merit (and not necessarily because Ranikor is being given a civil subdivision).
Moreover, another important factor is road and presently people are facing hardships because of poor connectivity,” he said.
According to a survey, there are 22 government establishments already in place in the constituency besides various educational institutions, he said.
The constituency has 175 villages with a population of approximately one lakh which include 31,000 eligible voters.
Reacting to another query, the Mawsynram MLA said the committee has no intention to serve any ultimatum to the state government in this regard.
Asked if he would consider resigning as a member of the legislative assembly, Shangpliang said the demand for a civil sub-division is not for any political gain but for the welfare and benefit of the people of the constituency.
