SHILLONG: City police have begun questioning some people believed to be instigators of the agitation during the recent unrest which led to law and order breakdown for almost a week here.
Talking to media persons on Monday, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis Marak said police have obtained some leads based on which some people, known to be instigators but might not be directly involved, were being interrogated.
“We have inputs and evidence on the involvement of those instigators and they are being questioned,” Marak said.
Replying to a query, the district police chief said that filing of charge sheet against those people would take some time since the situation was still volatile and investigation into the recent law and order problem in the city was yet to be completed.
“Whoever is found involved are being issued notices and we are recording their statements and also looking at other evidences extracted from our sources,” the SP said, while pointing out that charge sheet in some cases would be filed very shortly.
Asked about the situation in the city a month after the unrest began, Marak said things have improved but police were keeping a close watch on the situation as it did not want criminal elements to take advantage of it.
On the curfew in the city, Marak said it was imposed as a precautionary measure since police have inputs that some elements were trying to make use of the situation by creating problems. “Past experiences also remind us that such incidents take place at night and hence we don’t want to keep our guards down,” he added.
