SHILLONG: With heavy rain lashing the city and other parts of the state, the East Khasi Hills district administration has asked different departments to be on alert.
EKH Deputy Commisionner PS Dkhar said departments under the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) – like Fire and Emergency services, PWD, forest, health and police – have been asked to remain alert in view of the rain in the city.
He also said the standard procedure is that DDMA reacts immediately in case of a calamity. This year, no landslide or uprooting of trees has been reported in the city so far. Apart from rain, Shillong and other parts are witnessing heavy wind for the past few days.
Last year, three people were killed near Raj Bhavan when a tree fell on the road due to incessant rains.
The Department of Forest is identifying trees in the city which are posing risk. The India Meteorological Department has also warned that heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya on Wednesday and Thursday.
Shillong has also recorded 27.6 mm of rainfall since 8.30 am on Monday till 8.30 am on Tuesday.
