SHILLONG: The Sohra Government College Students’ Union (SGCSU) demanded the creation of Mathematics and Statistics departments in the institution.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Education Minister, Lakhme Rymbui on Thursday, the president of SGCSU, Ethylbert Khongrymmai said the creation of the two departments in the college was the need of the hour.

At the same time, the union also placed before the minister the need to introduce Science and Commerce streams in the college. He said, “There are parents who cannot afford to send their wards to Shillong to study Science and Commerce. This made the students choose Arts over Science and Commerce.”

Among other demands of the union included hostel for boys and girls, bus services, fencing of the College campus and security personnel to check trespassers, punctuality of students and identity cards.

As assured by the Minister, the union will wait for two months regarding the fulfillment of their demands.
