SHILONG: Following the three North Eastern states taking measures to stop harmful formalin-laced fish being sold in their state, Meghalaya Government has now asked the Food and Civil Supplies and the Health and Family Welfare departments to conduct a study on the various kinds of fish which coming into the State from other parts of the country
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday told reporters that there was a need to find out if the fishes coming from outside the met the safety standards or not
Earlier, there were reports that harmful formalin-laced fish had been seized in Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
It may be mentioned that formalin is the chemical used to preserve bodies and prevent its decay in mortuaries.
“We can understand the impact it can have on the human body if formalin is put into fish” Chief Minister said.
“There are some areas that are supplying fish that had certain chemicals which are not safe for human consumption. The States like Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have abundant of those supplies,” Sangma said.
He further stated that it was for this reason that that the State Government has given necessary instructions to conduct a research what kind of chemicals were extensively being used which are harmful and accordingly decisions will be made.
The Chief Minister further observed that there were issues of adulteration in almost everything and Government was worried about it .
Sangma also said that nobody had any kind of idea on the pesticides which were being used on the vegetables coming to Meghalaya from outside.
“The situation is very critical. As a government we are very concern about it,” he added.
