CS to appear before minority panel

SHILLONG: Chief Secretary Y Tsering is in Delhi to attend a hearing of the National Commission for Minorities on the Punjabi Lane issue.
Earlier, the commission had deputed its member, Manjit Singh Rai, who visited Shillong on June 5 and 6 to assess the situation following the plan of the government to relocate settlers of Sweepers’ Lane.
The commission on June 13 had considered Rai’s report and it was decided that the Ministry of Home Affairs may be requested not to withdraw the security force till peace is restored and chief secretary may be requested not to take any steps to relocate the Punjabi Lane residents since they had been staying there for over 200 years.
