TURA: The Election Commission of India has announced August 23rd as polling day for the South Tura legislative assembly constituency (LAC) where Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma will be contesting to make his entry into the state legislature.

While voting will be from 8 AM to 4 PM on August 23rd, counting of votes will take place on August 27th.

With the EC’s announcement the model code of conduct has come into effect in the entire West Garo Hills district under which falls the prestigious 51-South Tura constituency.

The by-poll has been necessitated following the resignation of sitting MLA Agatha K Sangma, last month. Agatha stepped down to pave the way for her elder brother to contest the seat after he became the chief minister of the state in March, this year.

The date of issue of Gazette notification for the by-election to pave the way for aspiring candidates to file their nominations for the contest will be on July 30th. The last day for nominations is on August 6th with scrutiny of the candidates papers to be taken up the next day. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is August 9th.
