SHILLONG: Questions are being raised about the credibility of the BSF who had falsely alleged that three Khasi youths, who were apprehended while crossing over to the Indian border from Bangladesh without valid documents, were suspected HNLC cadres.

The BSF in a statement on Saturday last had claimed that the three youths — Paila Tynsong (27), Mathius Khonglah (18) and Edamon Kongwang (22) — of Synrempunjee village who were apprehended on January 12 were suspected HNLC members.

The BSF claim was however, denied by the State police following thorough interrogation of the three youths.

“We have interrogated the three boys but there is no evidence that they are HNLC members or had any links with the banned militant outfit,” SP (City) M Kharkrang said on Thursday while also informing that the three Khasi youth have been remanded in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the HNLC has also denied that the three youths were members of the outfit.

“The three persons who have been apprehended by the BSF have no connection with our organisation,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement on Thursday.

While condemning the frequent arrest of Khasis who live in Bangladesh, the HNLC said such action on the part of the government showed that they harboured anti-Khasi sentiments.

“If the government is really concerned against influx of outsiders then why the work permit system is not being strictly implemented?” Nongtraw questioned.
