Two held as Shillong police recover cache of arms, ammunition

SHILLONG: Two persons were arrested after Shillong Police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunitions which was meant to be smuggled out to Bangladesh through Tripura.

Shillong  Police on Thursday arrested two persons identified as Naresh Chakma (35) and Sambikash Chakma (28) from Sherowali Travel Agency counter and recovered  from their possession 296 rounds of live .32 ammunition, 100 rounds of AK series rifles ammunition and two .32 pistols

East Khasi Hills SP, Davis Marak said that they were produced before the Court on Friday and the court remanded them to seven days police custody.

He said that as per the preliminary statements of the arrested people, they were scheduled to go to Tripura and the consignment of arms and ammunition was meant for somebody in Bangladesh.

Police is not ruling out if the consignment was meant for some militant groups in Bangladesh.
