SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) youth wing slammed the KHADC for being ineffective on the issue of non-tribal labourers working without trade license.
In a memorandum to Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and executive member in-charge of Labour, KHADC, the KHNAM asserted that it was the NGOs that were performing the task of the KHADC and the Enforcement wing of the Council.
“If the KHADC still shy away from its duties and responsibilities other organisation will be force to take up the matter for the security of the indigenous tribes of the State,” president of KHNAM, Thomas Passah said.
The KHNAM youth wing said there was fear of illegal immigrants being able to penetrate as labour in the state following the release of the final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
“It is reported that these labourers could be illegal immigrants whose name have not been included in the final draft NRC of Assam. Over 40 lakhs people have not been included in the Final draft NRC of Assam and this is a very big reason for the KHADC to adopt additional measures to ensure that our identity is protected at all time,” Passah said.
“Meghalaya is a soft target to illegal immigrants for the last five decades and most of these illegal immigrants have been found safe haven in Meghalaya in the name of cheap labour,” he added.
He pointed out to the during surprise inspection of a project undertaken by L&T Company at a site located at NEIGRIHMS, labourers were found working without trading license.
