SHILLONG: The much awaited construction of the Polo Vendors Market is on the verge of completion as75 per cent of the work has been completed.
Dubbed as the ‘Times Square’, credit goes to former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s vision of building a structure at the proposed shopping complex at Polo market. The structure is set to transform the busy Polo market area.
Official sources told The Shillong Times that the Vendors market is proposed to rehabilitate 297 vendors and shopkeepers.
The National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) is implementing the project and the civic board is the beneficiary as the particular land where the market is coming up belongs to the Municipal Board.
The Central Government has sanctioned Rs 21.41 crore out of which Rs 10.70 crore has already been utilized.
The former MUA-II government planned to develop a beautiful shopping complex extending till the Polo junction and an extensive master plan has been prepared for the same.
It is also learnt that the department will give first preference to those shopkeepers who had been evicted from the old Polo market. Last year, meat vendors at Polo were evicted by the Shillong Municipal Board to pave way for construction.
