New Delhi: Work for the much needed Mawphlang-Weiloi-Mawkyrwat-Ranikor road that links Meghalaya to Bangladesh will start soon, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) said on Friday.
Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L. Tongkhar met NHIDCL Executive Director W Blah and General Manager Col. M S Deol on the two-lane road project which he termed as the “people’s aspiration”. The MLA informed that NHIDCL was ready to float the tender for consultancy work. “They have assured to start the construction work within two years and to complete the entire project in two more years,” he added.
“As the local representative I have assured them of all necessary support wherever required to expedite the work”, he stated.
The project is a dream of the people of five constituencies – Mawphlang, Mawsynram, Mawkyrwat, Ranikor and Baghmara, the legislator added.
The Centre had earlier approved the Mawngap-Ranikor road passing through West and South Khasi Hills linking Bangladesh as a national highway.
Under the project, the existent road will be widened and restructured so that the 110-km stretch is declared a national highway and a road of economic and strategic importance. This will help serve the economic interests of the region and for efficiently securing the territorial integrity of India, the legislator added.
