SHILLONG:The William-nagar Main Market Merchants’ Association has demanded deployment of adequate security personnel in and around the market area within 10 days.
In a memorandum submitted to the East Garo Hills DC and SP, the association said that after the removal of paramilitary forces from the market in view of the recent unrest in Shillong, scores of unwanted incidents like extortion, demands and thefts have taken place in the area and many incidents go unreported due to fear of reprisal from the bad elements.
The association also said that the area has become a safe haven for unwanted elements as criminals come to the shop and demand cash in the name of NGOs and organisation and on refusal, shopkeepers are assaulted.
They further added that if paramilitary forces are not deployed within 10 days, they would close down the market indefinitely to avoid any untoward incident.
