Govt to study pros and cons

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said the government is conducting a “complete study” to see if an NRC-like exercise can be conducted in the state.
Talking to media persons after a meeting of the MDA partners, Sangma said the matter is being discussed and the government “will see how to move forward”.
The internal meeting which was attended by many Ministers and Chief Secretary besides other officials reviewed the current situation in the state and got an update on the situation in Meghalaya.
The MDA’s allies discussed the impact of the publication of the draft NRC list in Assam and advised the government to immediately strengthen the existing infiltration check gates.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the MDA partners have also suggested setting up additional infiltration check gates and strengthening the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security Act.
Many pressure groups in the state have been demanding an NRC-like exercise and implementation of the inner line permit to check influx of illegal immigrants.
Urban Affairs Minister Hamlet Dohling said the government has already directed deputy commissioners and senior police officers to be vigilant, besides asking NGOs, Rangbah Shnong and citizens to inform authorities if they see suspicious people in their respective localities.
Meanwhile, the chief minister refused to comment on the KHADC lineage bill saying there is no update on it and the matter has to be discussed.
