IMPHAL: Officials on duty for the tenth Manipur Legislative Assembly elections scheduled on January 28 have started moving to their assigned polling stations.

Election officials said for the far-flung areas, helicopters would be used to carry the officials and necessary equipments.

Election Commission has also directed the Indian Oil Division to depute a senior official to Manipur so that petroleum products would be available.

State election officials have requisitioned about 1400 vehicles to transport security personnel. “There were shortage of vehicles and would be hired from neighbouring states,” they said.

Informing that transport departments of Assam and Nagaland have been officially intimated to provide some more light vehicles, the source said the requisitioned vehicles are likely to arrive at the earliest.

Meanwhile, almost all the required 350 companies of security personnel have reported for duty.

Security forces from outside the state have been stationed at various locations, specially at educational institutions in the capital areas, the source disclosed. For smooth despatching of security personnel, the Transport Cell (Election) at Palace compound and head office of the transport department are being manned by its personnel round the clock, added the source.
