TURA: The National People’s Party has filed another model code of conduct violation charge against Independent candidate John Leslee Sangma on Monday for using loud speakers in a locality beyond the stipulated time of campaign.
In his complaint, NPP’s Mathias Marak, election agent to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, said John was repeatedly violating the election code and cited the use of loudspeakers in an election meeting at Dolampong locality well into 11pm on August 11.
The NPP stated in its official complaint that after violating the model code by giving inflammatory speeches wounding the religious sentiments of people, the former MLA has once again broken the rules and violated a Supreme Court ruling that bars use of loudspeakers beyond 10 pm.
“John Leslee’s actions… are regrettably not a healthy example,” stated the NPP complaint as it urged upon the Election commission to look into the matter to ensure a free and fair poll.
John has already been show caused by the Election Commission for using inflammatory words against Purno Sangma and daughter Agatha.
Allegations denied
However, John denied screening a video of Purno Sangma visiting a temple and accepting a ‘tika’ as alleged by the NPP in its complaint to EC.
“I have replied to the notice… and have done my duty where I have clarified that no such screening of video of Lt P A Sangma visiting a mandir and accepting a tika was screened,” he said.
He accused NPP leaders, including Mathias Marak, of being misleading and demanded evidence. “This is a diversion tactic,” he added.
However, the former MLA has again raised the same issue in his clarification statement questioning if such a video does exist which, according to the Independent candidate, goes against Christian principles.
