Outgoing guv Ganga Prasad for better livelihood of farmers

SHILLONG: Outgoing Governor Ganga Prasad stressed the need for improving the livelihood of farmers and recollected the time he spent with them here in the state. Speaking to The Shillong Times after attending the Silver Jubilee celebration of BBS College on Wednesday, Prasad said, “Ever since I arrived in Meghalaya and having interacted with different people, (I found) the people of the state are very good, especially the farmers. I have worked among them.”
He spoke of farmers growing Lakadong turmeric in which he encouraged them to go ahead with their work and 1,000 farmers came and fund was also created for them. “The people here are good, hardworking and the Centre is taking initiatives to develop Meghalaya and take it forward,” he said.
Prasad mentioned about the launch of the Rs 218-crore Milk Mission and said even the work for Mushroom Mission is on. “There are many works being done including on jackfruit. The Japan ambassador who wrote to me about sending Japanese tourists here said he would send scientists to get better mushroom,” he added.
“I like meeting people here and I think I have done whatever I can for Meghalaya’s development,” he said.
Prasad said he has spoken to educational institutions and that education sector here is doing well and it has the potential to do better.
According to him, to help farmers’ livelihood, he tried to initiate work on food processing centres and the state government is also working on it.
