SHILLONG: There were not many takers for imported fish which arrived in city markets on Thursday after the ban that was imposed for almost a month was lifted.
Though there were assurances by the health minister and the Fisheries Department, there was no testing carried prior to the sale of fish.
A visit to Bara Bazar revealed that there were only a few people buying the imported fish.
The government has allowed sale of imported fish from Wednesday.
A fish seller said since it was the first day, there were not many buyers.
He hoped that the fish sale would pick up in the coming days.
No stall for local fish
There is no exclusive stall for local fish in Bara Bazar.
Even during the ban on imported fish, sellers were stationed in other parts of the city but not in Bara Bazar.
A fish buyer said it would be ideal for the fish association or the state government to put up a stall in Bara Bazar only for local fish.
