SHILLONG: The President, Meghalaya Indigeneous People Forum (MIPF) , Jaiaw Langsning W Anthony has said that the MIPF believes that the NGOs functions for assistance towards better governance primarily for the sake of the local people is mistaken by some as a hindrance.

While reacting to the news item, “Attempts to politicize bureaucracy uncalled for”, (ST, Jan 24) the president said that the headline interalia stated that the NGOs or the politicians of Meghalaya are a hindrance to any move towards better governance.

“The statements of a section of MLAs who made public comments perhaps for the first time with regard to the appointment of the DC, East Khasi Hills by a local senior bureaucrat from the state cadre cannot be mistaken as a hindrance towards better governance as seemingly the MLAs have at heart the interest of the local people while making the statement,” said the president.

Many senior IAS officers have voiced their concern on the tendency to communalize the civil service. “This is far from the truth. The fact remains that they lack interaction with the local people and don’t understand the ethos of the local people,” he said
