Shillong: UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh has drawn severe criticism following his statement that the party might seek transfer of Khasi-Jaintia employees from Garo Hills in the wake of the abduction of two MeECL engineers by GNLA cadres.

Criticizing Lyngdoh for such irresponsible statement, residents of Garo Hills have termed his comment as ‘a statement aimed at inciting communal riots’.

“We the Khasis, Jaintias and Garos have been living together for ages and there has never been any such problem in the past. Lyngdoh’s statement seeking the transfer of the Khasi-Jaintia employees from Garo Hills is highly sensitive as it appears as if we are behind the abduction. The two employees have been abducted by a militant outfit,” a resident of Williamnagar told The Shillong Times on Saturday.

He also stated that they never expected a high profile politician like Paul Lyngdoh to make such a statement. Such comments and demands can affect the peace and harmony among the three indigenous communities and give rise to communal riots, the resident added
