WILLIAMNAGAR: Hundreds of students and general public walked alongside teachers in Songsak town of East Garo Hills on Wednesday to demand justice for a teacher who died after an alleged assault while in police custody in the first week of August.
The protesters are demanding action against those police personnel posted at Dagal outpost who assaulted school teacher Hillary Marak.
The victim, hailing from Chidimit village, was picked up by a team of police personnel from a village market allegedly in an inebriated condition on the night of August 3 last.
He was released from Dagal outpost the next day after an alleged assault, the previous night.
With no medical check-up conducted on him, the teacher returned home reportedly with bruises on his body and became bedridden.
He died a week later, on August 10, without any medical attention.
Anger has been brimming ever since the death and the public have been demanding action against those policemen who were behind the murder of the teacher.
A magisterial as well as police enquiries have been ordered and the officer in charge of Dagal outpost has been transferred to district headquarters in Williamnagar.
The participants at the rally are calling for the immediate suspension of the guilty policemen and stern punishment according to law. They are also demanding that the government provide compensation for the family of the deceased teacher.
Days before the rally, the widow of Hillary Marak petitioned the deputy commissioner of East Garo Hills urging him to speed up the investigation into the death of her husband. She also pointed out that the post mortem report of her husband was yet to be prepared.
