: Nongkrem MLA, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has brushed aside the majority’s preconception about politics stating that it is not a ‘dirty game’ or an easy way to make money.

Making this statement before a huge crowd at Madan Iewrynghep, Laitumkhrah here on Monday, Basaiawmoit said people of the State have been brained washed into believing that politics is a bad thing which involves multitude corruption and other malpractices.

“They (people) are not interested in taking part in politics, as they look at it from a different point of view which projects rampant corruption giving rise to other malpractices”, he reiterated.

Because of the lukewarm attitude of the people towards politics, bad people tend to take advantage by entering into politics. “It is for this reason that we find that politics is so corrupt in our State”, Basaiawmoit said, adding that the bad governance has affected the poor people who from time to time are becoming more and more vulnerable to such problems.

Terming politics as ‘Sacred’, the MLA said “Politics means power and authority which goes into shaping the human behaviour, decision and policy making, implementation of power and others”.

He said that for the last 40 years, the people have been led by their neck and charmed by some scrupulous and power hungry politicians who in no way contributed to the betterment and development of the indigenous communities.

The Clean Politics Campaign marks the beginning of a ‘Revolution’ to achieve better governance in the state, Basaiawmoit claimed while adding “It is high time for the people to wake up to reality and realize the danger that awaits us. We need to come together under one roof and root out corruption once and for all as the CPC is the only ‘antidote’ to these societal ills in the state”.

Pointing out the various social ills that prevails in the society at present, Ardent said above all, corruption can be termed as the deadliest kind of disease, ‘cancer’ which spreads over far and wide at a very fast rate. He also mentioned alcoholism, domestic violence, lack of unity, absence of a strict marriage act and increase in the number of Below Poverty Lines (BPLs) as other main causes which contributes to the present situation of the state.

It may be recalled that as a Legislator of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly representing the Nongkrem Assembly Constituency, Basaiawmoit tried to introduce the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Bill. “But no legislator supported me in this move, as this Bill would provide financial assistance to the women deserted by their husbands”, he said.  Basaiawmoit said that he has been campaigning all over the State about Clean Politics and professors, teachers, men and women and people with integrity have extended massive support to the Clean Campaign Politics in the State.
