SHILLONG: Phulbari MLA SG Esmatur Mominin asked the state government on Friday to build embankments on both sides of the Rongai river to save the plains belt of Garo Hills from the fury of flood.
The Revenue and Disaster Management Department on Friday issued a flood warning to West Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills in view of the excessive release of water by China, which may led to unprecedented rise of water level in the Brahmaputra.
Talking to media persons, Mominin said this is a dream project of his brother MI Islam and late PA Sangma and if it materialises, the plains of Garo Hills can produce enough rice to feed the entire state for six months.
Phulbari had suffered the wrath of the rivers in the past. According to the MLA, he has already taken up the matter with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and they would visit New Delhi soon to take up the matter with the Water Resources Ministry.
Asserting that his constituency is a flood-prone area, he, however, lamented that the area has not seen any development in the last 10 years, especially in terms of roads and communications.
“Only one road was taken up in the last 10 years and even that road was not completed,” he said while informing he has submitted many road proposals to the NPP-led government out of which it has agreed to take up at least five projects in the constituency.
“As far as I know tenders have also been called for few road projects,” he said and added that Rs 59 crore have been sanctioned by the state government for taking up the road projects in the area and the work is likely to begin by the end of this year.
