TURA: The two-day dawn to dusk ‘non-cooperation movement’ protest call given by student and social organisations in South Garo Hills in anger over lack of repair of the roads concluded peacefully on Wednesday evening.
The protest by several organisations hit normal life substantially with education institutions, shops and business houses remaining closed and people stayed indoors as public transport went off the roads.
The few government offices that opened up for work had to make do with a skeleton staff and total absence of visitors.
The protest shutdown severely impacted all three regions of South Garo Hills-Nangalbibra coal belt, Baghmara-Rongara and Chokpot.
The absence of transport has resulted in a drastic drop in essential commodities, particularly rice, sugar and vegetables.
