Scholars to address KAS language rally

SHILLONG: Many scholars will attend the rally on Saturday organised by the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) in demand for the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule.
KAS president Dr DRL Nonglait said after a short public rally at Fire Brigade ground at 11 am, a procession up to Malki ground will be taken out. The KAS president informed that the speakers who will explain the benefits if the language is included in the Eighth Schedule will include Prof A Kharmalki from Khasi department NEHU, president of NESO, Samuel Jyrwa, former NEHU professor, Dr SL Marbaniang, Dr P Nongtdu from Jaintia Eastern College, former principal of UCC, Dr BR Kharlukhi, besides members of the society. He said that they have been following up this issue with Union ministers, MPs, the chief minister and Cabinet ministers in the State.
“We hope that the Centre will take cognizance of the resolution to be adopted by the Assembly in the upcoming session on the need to include the Khasi language in the Sixth Schedule,” he said.
Meanwhile, the KAS president also urged the public, especially students and teachers from schools and colleges and university to attend the rally.
FKJGP supports KAS rally
The FKJGP central body on Thursday has extended their support to the Khasi Authors’ Society-organised rally schedule to be held on Saturday.
The rally is to garner support for the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
In a statement issued here, the federation has urged the Khasi community to be united and come forward in support of the move. They have also requested members of different organisation of all units to be part of the rally that will commence from Firebrigade Ground, Laitumkhrah at 11 am.
