SHILLONG: As the war of words continue between DD Lapang and Congress party over his sudden resignation, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Dr Celestine Lyngdoh has justified the decision of the AICC president, Rahul Gandhi to remove Dr Lapang from the post of the MPCC president

Talking to media persons here on Monday, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh said that the AICC had taken the right decision since how could the party go to Assembly polls in the State when its president was in and out of the hospital.

“During the height of our campaign not only Dr Lapang but even his wife was in the hospital. It was a stressful period for Dr Lapang and the AICC felt it was proper to relieve him from the post of the MPCC chief,” Dr Celestine said

He further stated that AICC president, Rahul Gandhi always wanted to bring a new face in the party adding that he (Rahul) always wanted young leaders to be given an opportunity to serve the party in various positions.

Meanwhile, he said that it was known fact that the Congress in Meghalaya was not in power and to accommodate senior members in a position where they could serve the people of the State that did not arise.

“May be this could be one of the reasons that Dr Lapang has left the party,” the MPCC chief said.

Informing that the party has accepted the resignation of Dr Lapang, he said that the party would no longer reconcile with the former Congress leader.

“The door for Lapang in the Congress is no longer open,” the MPCC chief said.

When asked if the end of Lapang journey with the Congress was very bitter, he said that it would not be right to say that the end was a bitter.

“We must admit that whatever positions that Dr Lapang has held in his political career , it is because of the Congress party.  It was the Congress who made Dr Lapang five times Chief Minister of the State,” Dr Celestine said.

The MPCC chief further said that if he (Dr Lapang) had said that he would resign from active politics, then the party would have felicitate him in a big way.

“He has decided other way round all by himself. As the party, we are very thankful to the service rendered by Dr Lapang to the party,” he added.
