SHILLONG: The parliamentary sub-committee on official language has stressed the need to make Hindi as the official language of the country at the earliest.
Chairman of the sub- committee Chintamani Malvya, while advocating the usage of Hindi in the Northeast, said the Centre is focusing on 55 percent usage of Hindi in the central government offices in the Northeast.
“Northeast falls under category ‘C’ and here we want to have 55 percent usage of Hindi in central government offices. In ‘A’ and ‘B’ category areas, we already have 100 percent usage,” Malvya said.
The sub-committee carried out inspection of various central government offices to ensure implementation of Hindi as official language.
“We have visited various government offices like Customs and made enquiry on the usage of Hindi,” he added.
According to Malvya, though the Centre wants regional languages to progress and more literary works be done, Hindi is required once a person steps out of Northeast India and joins mainland or prepares for any competitive examination.
“We want regional language to progress and it should be developed. We don’t have any objection on the growth of regional language but Hindi should also grow along with it,” he said.
