GUWAHATI: Wildlife and biodiversity conservation organisation, Aaranyak’s Tiger Research and Conservation Division (TRCD) in collaboration with directorate, Manas Tiger Reserve is organising a five-day intensive hands on training programme on “Population Monitoring Techniques for Terrestrial Mammals”, at Manas National Park, Assam, from November 5.
The training programme will be conducted for students and early career professionals having degrees in Life Sciences (Wildlife Science, Zoology, Botany, Veterinary, Forestry and Biotechnology), Environmental Science, Geography, or any other science degree.
The course will offer practical use of different methods for estimating population abundance and density of terrestrial mammals for applied wildlife research and conservation.
“The training will also teach latest programmes and tools for camera trapping data visualisation, interpretation, and basic analysis. Basic exposures on distance sampling and other relevant sampling methods will be provided. Participants will also learn the use of mapping software (QGIS and Google Earth), field navigation devices (GPS, map reading), carnivores and herbivores signs,” a press statement by Aaranyak issued here said on Wednesday.
The training will focus on best field and in-house practices. Scientist and wildlife biologist at Aaranyak, M Firoz Ahmed, population ecologist, Abishek Harihar and biologist at Aaranyak, Dipankar Lahkar will be the principle course instructors of the training.
M Firoz Ahmed has been involved in conservation research on herpeto-fauna and tigers in India since 1998, Abishek Harihar has worked on tiger conservation in northern India since 2003 while Dipankar Lahkar, has worked on tiger research and conservation across different landscapes in India in general since 2009.
