SHILLONG: Following the report of pilferage of JNNURM bus parts recently, the State Government has taken stock of the situation to prevent such thefts from recurring in future.
When contacted, State Urban Affairs Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh said she has sent some officers to look into the matter. However, she said that at present the JNNURM buses are under the custody of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC).
The Urban Affairs Minister said the MTC should be more vigilant about safe custody of the buses kept in its depot. “The buses are under the safe custody of the MTC and an agreement to this effect has already been signed with the Corporation,” Ampareen said.
Interestingly, when contacted, the MTC Depot Manager was unavailable for comments as he is currently out of station.
Meanwhile, State Transport Minister, AT Mondal said he had written to the Urban Affairs Department to deploy people to look into the matter and to ensure that such things do not happen in future.
It may be reminded that miscreants stole five rear view mirrors and damaged the cover of the diesel tank of the JNNURM buses parked at the MTC depot at Saw Lad. The State Government has not cleared the minute details about the project and the detailed proposal is yet to be presented before the State Cabinet.
The Central Government under the JNNURM had sanctioned 120 buses for the State, which included 100 mini buses, and 20 standard buses but the project is constantly delayed leading to the outcry of commuters who are irked by the arbitrary services provided by the local taxis.
