SHILLONG: The Congress has opposed any move to shift the Shillong Medical College from the current site at Jhalupara.
In a statement on Monday, Opposition Chief Whip P T Sawkmie said the plan of the government to select a new site for construction of the medical college is “very wrong” and the party will oppose any such move.
“The government has to understand the ground reality of the project. The agreement was made for construction of the medical college on the TB Hospital premises and once the site is changed, a new agreement has to be made and it will be time consuming,” he said.
Sawkmie said a search committee will have to be appointed to look for land, which in turn will affect the state exchequer as price will escalate and many other things will come up.
“The government instead should work harder to make sure that our state has its own medical college. All of us should be ashamed because a state like Mizoram has its own medical college – Mizoram Institute of Medical Education & Research (MIMER) – which was established on August 8, 2018, while a state like ours could not even start the project,” Sawkmie said.
According to Sawkmie, it seems that the government would like to play politics with the development of the state.
