Tura: Mendipather police recovered the bullet-riddled body of a man from a road between Resubelpara and Gajing on Wednesday night alongwith a note left by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) which took responsibility for the killing accusing the deceased of extorting money in its name and raping minor girls.
People returning from a wedding party came across the corpse on the roadside not far from the tri-junction to Gajing-Mendipather-Songsak road around 9:30 pm on Wednesday and immediately informed police who rushed to the spot.
The man, believed to be in his mid 20s had his hands bound behind, eyes blind folded and was shot three times on his head and chest.
The note left behind by the GNLA claimed that the victim, John Ch Marak, was collecting money in the name of GNLA and raping minor girls. Police have sent out notices to the nearby areas to ascertain the identity of the person mentioned as John in the note but has so far drawn a blank.
No empty ammunition shells of the weapon used for the killing was found but security forces recovered three live rounds of AK-47 ammo indicating that the person may have been shot dead by the Russian-made assault rifle.
Police suspect that the militants could have taken advantage of the bursting of firecrackers in the area on that fateful evening. There were two weddings in the region and revelers had been on a celebratory mood bursting fire crackers during the night during which time the militants may have opened fire on the victim.
The body of the villager has been taken to Williamnagar for post mortem and till filing of the report no person has come forward to claim it.
This is the second execution-style murder by GNLA militants in the area this year.
In January the militants shot dead two villagers near Rongrong village for using the name of the outfit to collect money. The bodies of Pak Momin and Engti Marak were recovered with bullet wounds from a village road at Rongrong last month.
