TURA: The Congress party in North Garo Hills district has reshuffled its officer bearers in three important party units, namely the District Congress Committee, the Youth Congress and the Mahila Congress following a general meeting held three days ago in Resubelpara.
The meeting comes eight months after it faced a humiliating defeat at the hands of its rival National People’s Party that swept the February election in the district snatching away three of the four assembly seats. Congress heavyweights, including former chief minister Salseng C Marak in Resubelpara and Cherak Momin in Kharkutta, were defeated along with sitting Bajengdoba legislator Brigady Marak at the hands of the NPP. It was only in Mendipathar constituency that the Congress could save its face with its candidate and sitting legislator Marthon Sangma winning the seat.
With Lok Sabha elections just months away and the Tura Lok Sabha seat falling vacant after the resignation of Conrad K Sangma, Congress is leaving no stone unturned to strengthen the party and boost the morale of its cadres.
The general meeting of the District Congress Committee (DCC) of North Garo Hills took place on Tuesday in which state party leaders, MPCC vice president Polycarp K Marak, MPCC general secretaries Noverfield Marak (ex-MLA), Mukul Das (ex-MLA) and Donbosh N Sangma attended.
The meeting elected ex-MLA Cherak Momin as DCC president, Bestine Marak and Devanand Sangma as vice presidents, Sengjrang Sangma and Manseng Momin as general secretaries, among others.
Likewise, the District Mahila Congress elected Denitha Arengh as president, Senthilla Marak as vice president and Merina Momin as general secretary, among others. The youth wing of the party, District Youth Congress, also elected its own office bearers with Barthiar M Momin as president and Sofic K Marak as vice president, among others.
