Workshop on piggery held in city

SHILLONG: A workshop on ‘Development of Piggery Value Chain Ecosystem for Cooperative sector in North East Region’ was held at the State Convention Centre in the city on Thursday.
The workshop was organised by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), ICAR in collaboration with the State Government.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated that the latest technologies should be adopted in the rearing and breeding of pigs and expressed hope that the workshop would prove to be beneficial for the people of the region.
Earlier, KN Kumar, Agriculture Production Commissioner, informed that 75 per cent of the people in the North East region consume pork.
He also informed that pigs are still being reared in the indigenous and non-scientific manner which is unable to keep up with the demands of the region.
Kumar said that the objective of the workshop is to intensify piggery in the region through scientific means and to promote piggery in the region.
He added that the workshop aims at establishing a value chain by creating a pool of private commercial breeders who would adopt scientific methods which would in turn prove beneficial for the entire region.
The MD, NCDC also presented a cheque of Rs 34,52,52,800 to the Deputy Chief Minister for the Meghalaya Milk Mission.
