SHILLONG: The NPP-led alliance in the state is facing a daunting task to form a consensus among partners on common candidate but the party is confident to cross the hurdle without glitches.
Talking to media persons here recently, NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said all the allies may propose names for a common candidate but “I am sure that at the end, all will agree on one name selected by the MDA (Meghalaya Democratic Alliance) which will meet very shortly”.
When asked about BJP, which is contemplating contesting the Lok Sabha polls alone, Kharlukhi said, “It is a national party and has its own policy.”
The coalition was formed after the February election and the NPP “cannot say anything if individual parties project their candidates”, Kharlukhi explained.
The MDA will also discuss whether to have a common symbol.
The NPP state head, while speaking on the strength of the alliance, said, “I am 105 per cent confident that this government will last even if there is a new Government in New Delhi next year,” Kharlukhi said.
The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) may meet next week to discuss whether to name a common candidate. Both UDP and HSPDP have proposed the names of common candidates.
