CBI court convicts passport office staff for graft

GUWAHATI: The court of special judge, CBI, Assam has sentenced Anjali Das Thakuria, a lower division clerk at Regional Passport Office here,  to undergo rigorous imprisonment for four years and a fine of Rs 5,000 in default and another imprisonment of six months under section 13 (2) R/w Section 13 (I) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The sentences are to run concurrently, a statement by CBI here informed on Wednesday.

The CBI case number RC 5(A)/2014-GWH was registered on the basis of a written complaint against the accused on September 12, 2014.

The allegation against Thakuria was that she had demanded a bribe of Rs 2000 for clearing the passport file of the complainant and for delivering the passport to his residence within seven days. The accused was caught red handed on September 15, 2014 by a CBI team in front of independent witnesses while demanding and accepting Rs 2000 from the complainant.

On completion of investigation, the charge sheet dated June 30, 2015 was submitted before the court under section 7 and section 13 (2) R/w 13 (1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 198
