SHILLONG: As cases of sexual assault are increasing in an alarming rate even in Meghalaya, the Women and Child Development Ministry is contemplating a mobile application that can help women and children in distress.
Minister of State for Women and Child Development Virendra Kumar said on Friday the application will have a panic button which, when pressed, will transmit the information to the nearest police station and help can be reached to the distressed person at the earliest.
The minister laid emphasis on the need for parents as well as public representatives making children aware on good and bad touches.
Kumar told reporters that the problem of sexual harassment and abuse of young girls and women should be dealt with the cooperation of NGOs, civil societies, local institutions, family and public representatives.
“A child must be made to understand what is good and bad touches,” he added.
Earlier in the day, he visited the working women’s hostel at Mission Compound, One Stop Centre at Ganesh Das Hospital, ICDS centre in Mylliem, Shillong Civil Hospital and PMAY and PMKVY centres.
He said the One Stop Centres, a central initiative, “is helpful for women as it facilitates them to complain about any form of harassment or domestic violence and it also helps affected persons legally, besides counseling”.
