SHILLONG: The state government will convene a consultative meeting with the vendors’ association of Shillong to sort out the problem of hawkers overrunning the city streets.
The decision on holding consultations with the vendors was taken at a meeting here on Wednesday which was attended by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Urban Affairs Minister Hamlet Dohling, Chief Secretary Y Tsering and other government officials.
“We want to take all the stakeholders on board before arriving at a decision,” Dohling said, while asserting the government’s keenness to decongest the city roads by removing the hawkers.
Dohling, however, made it clear that the government will not be responsible for unauthorised hawkers and action would be taken against them.
Meanwhile, the meeting also took note of the garbage accumulation in the city and as a corrective measure the district administration, Police department and the Shillong Municipal Board have been asked to penalise anyone found dumping garbage on the road side.
