Shillong: The State Government’s decision to compensate rape and human trafficking victims has evoked mixed criticism from the women NGOs of the State. CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing on Wednesday, while appreciating the State Government’s move, however, said that monetary compensation cannot alleviate the mental trauma of a rape or human trafficking victim.
The Cabinet on Tuesday had approved a comprehensive policy to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 to victims of rape and human trafficking under the Meghalaya Victim Compensation Scheme.
According to Kharshiing, the government should immediately transfer all rape cases to the fast track court for speedy trial.
“We hope that the compensation amount of Rs 50,000 is an interim amount and we expect the Government to hike the compensation limit,” she added.
Meghalaya United Women Welfare Organisation (MUWWO) president Aruna Biswa also stated that although the victims would be monetarily compensated but it cannot remove their mental agony.
She demanded that the Government should take stringent action against those who indulge in such heinous crimes against the fairer sex.
