Shillong: The Wah Umkhrah is 5 kms in length beginning from Demthring. It flows through several localities and is called by several names. The river crosses Demthring River Side, Law U Sib, Nongrah, Nohkaliar (Umpling) before entering Demseiniong area where it is gets the name Umkhrah.

Several rivulets empty themselves into the Umkhrah. Some of them flow through the commercial areas of Shillong including some of the leading hospitals and nursing homes.

Interestingly, although all the hospital owners and health care institutions were called to the meeting none responded. All the colleges and universities located in Shillong city were similarly invited but except for Shillong College and Sikkim Manipal University none of the others responded.

Other prominent absentees were the Pollution Control Board, the Khasi Hills District Council, the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority and the Environment and Forest department.

Of the Rangbah Shnong outside the Shillong Municipality only the Mawlai Town Dorbar representative, SD Khongwir, attended.

The Rangbah Shnong of different dorbar of Nongthymmai, including Madanrting, Umpling, Nongrah, etc., were conspicuous by their absence.
