SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has asked the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill beyond the four walls of the Secretariat.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting held with former leaders of the Union here on Saturday, KSU chief Lambokstarwell Margnar said, “The state government should also oppose the CAB outside the Secretariat.”
It may be mentioned that the MDA government last year had passed a cabinet resolution expressing its opposition to the bill.
The KSU president, however, was of the opinion that just a cabinet resolution was not enough keeping in mind that the bill if it becomes a law will only open the gates for illegal immigrants to enter the state.
He said under the banner of the North East Students’ Organisation, the KSU along with other social organisations from the different states of the North East region will also decide on their next step against the Centre which aggressively pushed through the bill.
Recalling one of the campaigns launched by Narendra Modi in Assam before he was elected as prime minister in 2014, KSU chief said Modi apart from talking about bringing change and development had assured to detect and deport illegal immigrants from the North East. “Ironically, before the end of his term, he (Modi) is now extending a warm welcome to such illegal immigrants. So now we can clearly understand the change and development he was talking about,” he said.
On the growing demand to drop the BJP from the MDA government, he, however ,said, “Well, I have nothing to comment on that and I want to leave it to the wisdom of this government to take a call on such matters.”
Meanwhile, Marngar informed that the meeting held with the present and former leaders of the KSU was to discuss on the proposed documentary film on the history and 40-year-long journey of the Union.
Earlier while speaking at the gathering, former KSU leader Sounder Cajee expressed concern over the mushrooming of NGOs in the state and emphasized that issues like the CAB which is concerning the state should be taken up under one common platform.
