Powerful blast in Hailakandi, no casualty

Silchar: A powerful bomb went off at Amala, a market place, 10 km south of Hailakandi town in southern Assam on Saturday.

Police said miscreants triggered the powerful explosive device with the help of a remote control at 2.30am, which was planted at the corridor of a shopping complex in Amala under Lala police station area in Hailakandi district.

Five shops were completely damaged due to the impact of the blast, police added, informing some pieces of metal were recovered from the place of blast.

However, there was no report of any causalty, police said.

Meanwhile, Army’s bomb experts were examining the nature of the device.

Senior officers of the police and the army rushed to the spot soon after the incident. While the area was cordoned off, a haunt has begun to arrest the miscreants involved.

Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Brajenjit Sinha ruled out involvement of any militant outfit in the incident.

The southern part of Hailakandi district bordering Mizoram is affected by Bru (Reang) militants.

However, this is the first time a bomb blast occurred in the district over the past two-decades, an official said.

Arms, explosives recovered : Meanwhile, security personnel on Saturday recovered cache of arms and explosives from a house at Harinadik village under Badarpur circle in Karimganj here.

Official sources said during a search operation security personnel recovered a country-made carbine weapon and two packets (approx weight 500 gm each) of suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Sources said seizure of such explosive and IEDs along with arm had averted a major tragedy in this part of Assam. (Agencies)
