SHILLONG: With Meghalaya government being criticised by the Supreme Court for its failure to curb illegal mining, the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said the state leadership has to be held responsible.

In a statement issued here, Sangma said the SC’s order, which is for the first time in the history of independent India, reflected that the Court could no longer trust a state government.

“The leadership has to be held responsible and with this exposure the leadership does not have both the moral and the legal right to continue in office,” he said.

The SC passed an order on Tuesday to ban transportation of coal in Meghalaya till February 19 and it has also refused to extend time to mine owners to transport the coal that has already been extracted.
